Hiring is not easy and if done in the wrong way can be damaging to both the brand and job applicant.
I’ve advised on hiring projects and recruited many roles throughout my career as a hiring manager and recruiter and know what works and what doesn’t work.
And it frustrates me when I see individuals and businesses attempting to recruit and going about it in the wrong way.
Why? Because the job seeker ultimately becomes the victim of bad hiring practises which adds to their pressure.
That’s why, today, I’ll talk through some general do’s and don’t to help you to understand a few basic requirements of the hiring process.
So listen up if you’re considering hiring or have done so recently and want to save time and money and make applicants feel at ease and welcome.
This episode is also useful if you’re looking for a role and want to know how to spot dubious recruitment processes.
Things to consider when hiring:
- Don’t start before you’re ready because this opens the floodgates and you’ll get lots of questions and extra work that you’re not ready to deal with
- Be ready to answer questions and talk about the business, the people, the team, the role (eg tell me about your business, has anyone worked in a row before what are your plans for the business and the team in the future, why are you hiring now?)
- Have a process in place to deal with responses and communicate with applicants so they know where they stand
- Communicate your timeline so that applicants know when the role opens when the closing date is expected when interviews will take place when a decision will be made
- Communicate with the people who have been unsuccessful to provide feedback to tell them ‘why’.
